Tuesday’s Bear by Alexandra Davis

Tuesday's Bear

Written in simple words and short sentences, “Tuesday’s Bear: A Tale of the Lost and Found” delivers a poignant message of hope and redemption for its readers. Writer Alexandra Davis, who has also written an article in this FFT issue (read ‘The Hard Talks,’ Page 50), creates an adorable protagonist, Bear who is lost and abandoned. Ending up with other items boxed out to a Lost & Found location, Bear fears all will end up in the trash. That is, until a family steps in to help each lost item find a forever home. The illustrations by Oliver Allison add a masterful touch to the words — indeed, the images are so powerful that younger readers can even use this as a picture book and make meaning. Targeted at the 4-8 years age group, “Tuesday’s Bear” will also resonate with adults.

While all the other items are either purchased or donated, Bear is chosen by the elder son of the family undertaking the entire project. The end author’s note explains the true story on which the fictitious Bear experience hinges.

It is not difficult to draw parallels with the world of foster care and adoption. Bear epitomizes what thousands of children and youth in foster care deal with. Those who are cared for by foster parents and end up either reunified with their families or adopted, are represented by the lost items in this book.

“Tuesday’s Bear” is easy to read, with a powerful message of hope and the role resource parents play in foster care.
