The Iliad: A Greek Mythology Primer and Persuasion: A Colors Primer by Jennifer Adams

The Iliad: A Greek Mythology Primer

From the compact design to the artful illustrations, “The Iliad: A Greek Mythology Primer,” is a
great way to introduce the kids in your care to historic literary works. The original “Iliad” is
depicted here through graphic portrayals of the primary and most famous Greek Gods: Zeus
and Hera, Athena, Hermes, Aphrodite, Demeter and Dionysus, Ares, Hephaestus, Poseidon,
Apollo and Artemis. There is not much by way of story telling but the characters are made
attractive to young minds through the illustrations by Allison Oliver. The size of the book is
perfect for toddler hands, and the short sentences by Jennifer Adams are just right to capture
their attention.

Persuasion: A Colors Primer

Jane Austen’s famous literary novel, “Persuasion,” is brought to life for toddlers in this board
book by Jennifer Adams. The illustrations by Alison Oliver highlight the predominant color
palette of England during the early 19th century. The characters are depicted in a manner that
brings out their personalities without any heavy text. Adams, who is the author of more than 60
books for children, creates an awareness of the Regency era that will pique the interest of new
readers. Apart from the color schemes revolving around beige, olive, navy, ivory, chestnut,
lavender, gray and scarlet, an interesting introduction is the color periwinkle. While those
knowledgeable about Austen know this color, it is a relatively uncommon one for kids — and I,
for one, am glad the creators of the book chose to include it here.
