The new video “Foster Families Speak” is a glimpse into the lives of foster parents and how they navigate various parts of the fostering journey. The film especially delves into the relationship between foster/adoptive parents and biological parents.

Included in the film are interviews with biological parents — some who were successful in reunifying with their children and others who ended up either losing custody of their children or made an adoption plan for them. The film also interviews former foster youth and people who have been adopted about their experience.

It was nice to see that the unique perspective of kinship families was included in the film. In reality, the film offers a wide variety of perspectives and experiences.

The film is honest and open. It’s easy to see the commitment and dedication the foster parents have for the children in their care.

The film is a quality introductory tool for foster parent trainings and could possibly be used as a recruitment video to encourage others to become foster parents as well. The Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York will be using the film to do just that “for both recruitment and public education,” according to AFFCNY’s Executive Director Pat O’Brien.
