Organizational Summary

Fostering Media Connections (FMC) is a nonprofit news organization that leads the conversation about children, youth and families in America.

FMC publishes high impact award-winning journalism on two distinct platforms: The Imprint, a news website, and Fostering Families Today, a bi-monthly print magazine.

Through its Youth Voices Rising program, FMC trains youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems the basics of journalism so they can take a more prominent position in the policy discourse that shapes their lives.

FMC seeks an editor for Fostering Families Today who is passionate about connecting people to resources and information that makes a difference in their lives. The editor will work closely with team members all over the country to support the production of Fostering Families Today magazine (published six times per year) and develop the magazine’s presence nationally through social media, conference attendance and other editorial duties to strengthen the publication.


  • Lead the production of six issues of Fostering Families Today per year, including copy, art, graphics and magazine layout.
  • Serve as lead liaison between the publication and its regular contributors and freelance writers.
  • Work with agencies to create custom inserts to be added to the magazine, including design/layout for some of these partners.
  • Work with communications team to develop monthly newsletter content and social media strategy, including engaging content for Facebook groups.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to strengthen the publication’s content and build out social media and webinars with the goal of diversifying educational opportunities for adoptive, foster care and kinship families that supports the mission of Fostering Families Today magazine.
  • Develop and work with an editorial advisory team to ensure content is current and useful for readers.
  • Write articles for Fostering Families Today and its website and social media platforms that educate, inform and inspire foster, adoptive and kinship families.
  • Create editorial and webinar calendars and story development throughout the year.
  • Work with FMC team to develop innovative ways to expand Fostering Families Today’s reach through podcasts, social media, webinars, websites and other platforms.
  • Act as lead in the creation of PDF downloads and ebooks to be distributed online, including occasional special issues (past issues have included topics such as kinship care, trauma-informed parenting, higher education for youth in foster care, etc.).
  • Support business development through research and meetings with current and potential subscription contracts. Review proposals and contracts as needed.
  • Work with FMC development team to produce grant proposals and insure grant deliverables are being met, as needed.
  • Other tasks may include copy editing and web design.

  • At least 5 years of editing experience.
  • Degree in journalism, communications or related field. (Experience may be substituted for a degree.)
  • Highly organized. Detail and deadline oriented.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Editorial layout skills (InDesign and Photoshop, or equivalent).
  • Team player who works well independently but does not hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification.
  • Copy editing and web design skills a plus.
  • Familiarity with foster care or kinship care also a plus.
